6 Reasons to un-lawn your yard…
Bio-diversity
Lawns typically consist of monoculture grasses, offering little to no habitat for wildlife. By converting your lawn into gardens filled with native plants, you can attract a diverse array of birds, butterflies, bees, and other beneficial insects, fostering biodiversity and creating a thriving ecosystem in your own backyard.
Personal Enjoyment
Gardens offer endless opportunities for creativity, self-expression, and relaxation. Whether you enjoy gardening as a hobby, find solace in connecting with nature, or simply appreciate the beauty of flowers and foliage, converting your lawn into gardens can enrich your life and enhance your outdoor experience.
Soil Health
Lawns often suffer from compacted soil, depleted nutrients, and erosion. Gardens, particularly those with a variety of plants and organic mulch, help improve soil structure, fertility, and microbial activity, creating a healthier growing environment for plants and promoting long-term sustainability.
Reduced Maintenance
Maintaining a lawn can be time-consuming and labor-intensive, requiring frequent mowing, fertilizing, and pest control. Gardens, especially those designed with native and low-maintenance plants, typically require less upkeep, saving you time, effort, and money in the long run.
Pollinator Support
Many native plants are excellent sources of nectar and pollen for pollinators such as bees and butterflies. By planting a diverse range of flowering plants in your garden, you can provide essential food and habitat for these vital pollinators, helping to support local ecosystems and ensure the health of agricultural crops.
Carbon Sequestration
Gardens with trees, shrubs, and other vegetation can act as carbon sinks, absorbing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through the process of photosynthesis. This helps mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas concentrations and offsetting carbon emissions.
Our Process
-
Consists of an hour long on site meeting to discuss potential locations and sizes of garden. I will sample soil and take note of site conditions for proper plant selection.
Following the meeting I’ll create a custom layout for your review, a custom plant palette with photos and plant info.
-
Heavy duty machinery can compact the soil and cause long-term damages. We use a kick-powered sod lifter to remove and roll existing sod. We can eithert haul it away and compost it, or leave it on site for re-use. Our system allows us to get into tight and delicate spaces without the risk of compaction.
-
We carefully plant high quality perennials sourced from local nurseries. I strive for plantings to consist of at least 75% native species, but fully native plantings are available by request. For plantings lager than 300 sqft discounts apply and smaller sized landscape plugs may be used.
